How To Connect Two Computers Together Without Using A Router or LAN

You must have wondered how to connect two computers together without using a router / LAN, then Crossover cable is the BEST solution. Using Crossover cable, you can easily connect a couple of computers to transfer data from one to another.

So, along with the two computers, you just need a crossover cable. This means, you do not need any router or LAN. Below is its tutorial:

STEP 1: IP Addresses Setup

Once you connect two computers using a crossover cable, first thing you need to do is configure the IP addresses of both the computers. All you need to remember is that the IP addresses should be chosen in such a way that both belong to same subnet.

For example, if the IP address of one computer is 192.168.0.1, the IP address of the other one should be 192.168.0.2

If you are using 255.255.255.0 as your subnet mask, then you can use the above IP addresses. So, if you are not sure with the subnet mask and IP addresses, then you can use the above two IP addresses.

And choose any of the IP address and use it as the DEFAULT GATEWAY. But make sure that you use the same DEFAULT GATEWAY for both the computers.

STEP 2: MAKING OF CROSSOVER CABLE

This is the most important and critical step, because without a proper crossover cable you cannot transfer data from one computer to other even if you get proper adjustments.

MAKING OF CROSSOVER CABLE

The blue & brown pairs are swapped and similarly the orange and green pairs are twisted. The below diagram will make it further clear as you can see that only 1,3 and 2.6 pins are crossed.

STEP 3: CREATE USER ACCOUNT

To ensure proper and smooth file transfers, make sure you create user accounts (administrator accounts) on both the computers using a same user ID and password. By doing so, you can easily access both the computers through the crossover cable.

STEP 4: DISABLE ALL THE FIREWALLS

It is very important to check that you disable all the firewalls offered by windows operating system by entering into the CONTROL PANEL, click on WINDOWS FIREWALL and then click on OFF. And if you using any firewalls from third party developers, then disable them also.
